Producer Amit Jani of the much-discussed film Udaipur Files recently had a closed-door meeting with India’s Information and Broadcasting
Producer Amit Jani of the much-discussed film Udaipur Files recently had a closed-door meeting with India’s Information and Broadcasting Minister Ashwini Vaishnaw on August 4, 2025, to discuss the film’s pending release. The film, starring Vijay Raaz, has faced a series of legal and censor board hurdles, delaying its theatrical debut.
Jani revealed this was his second meeting with the ministry regarding the movie, following petitions challenging the film’s release. Despite making numerous cuts as previously advised by the Central Board of Film Certification, the government raised fresh concerns under Section 6 of the Cinematograph Act, which permits intervention in a film’s certification.
The producer expressed hope for a positive decision from the government, indicating that his team is willing to comply with official directives to facilitate the release. He confirmed that the film’s release is tentatively scheduled for August 8, 2025, pending government approval.
Udaipur Files is a dramatized account based on the 2022 murder of tailor Kanhaiya Lal in Udaipur, Rajasthan, a case that sparked nationwide debate. The film had undergone significant scrutiny over its content, with calls for cuts and modifications to avoid communal tension. The government is currently reconsidering earlier recommendations and has withdrawn an order for six specific cuts to reassess the situation. The discussions between the producer and the Information and Broadcasting Ministry highlight ongoing deliberations on balancing creative expression with public sensitivity.
