Bollywood actor Imran Khan, who holds a United States citizenship and an Overseas Citizen of India (OCI) card, recently found himself at the center of a major legal controversy. The Foreigners Regional Registration Office (FRRO) served him an official notice directing him to leave India by October 28.
This action followed Khan’s participation in a political protest in Mumbai, which sparked complaints from political figures. Critics argued that as a foreign national, his involvement in local political demonstrations violated the conditions of his stay under the Immigration and Foreigners Act. While OCI cardholders enjoy lifelong visa privileges, they do not possess the political rights or the fundamental freedoms of speech and assembly reserved strictly for Indian citizens.
The FRRO notice warns that failing to comply with the directive will lead to criminal prosecution. However, the situation has ignited intense legal debate. Khan’s legal team has challenged the validity of the notice, arguing that it lacks specific details regarding which laws were broken and that OCI rules do not explicitly forbid attending public gatherings.
Faced with this expulsion order, the actor’s primary option is to seek legal recourse. His lawyers have moved to challenge the directive in the High Court, seeking urgent relief and questioning whether proper procedural fairness was followed before the extreme step of deportation was initiated.
