The Incident
Ranveer Singh performed at the International Film Festival of India (IFFI) in Goa on November 28, 2025. He mimicked the famous Daiva ritual sequence from Rishab Shetty’s film Kantara: Chapter 1. This sacred act shows gods like Panjurli, Guliga, and Chavundi Daiva from Karnataka’s coastal traditions. Videos went viral, sparking anger among devotees.
Why It Caused Trouble
A Bengaluru lawyer, Prashanth Methal, filed a complaint. He said Ranveer’s funny gestures and words hurt Hindu feelings. Ranveer called Chavundi Daiva a “female ghost,” which mocked its role as a guardian deity of divine feminine energy. Rishab Shetty, sitting nearby, signaled him to stop twice, showing the act’s sensitivity.

Legal Action
On January 28, 2026, police at High Grounds Station registered an FIR against Ranveer. Charges under Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita Sections 196, 299, and 302 cover promoting enmity and outraging religious sentiments. A court ordered this after Methal’s plea. The case heads to Bengaluru’s 1st Additional Chief Metropolitan Magistrate Court on April 8.
Public Reaction
Fans and groups like Hindu Janajagruti Samiti condemned it as disrespectful to Tulu community rituals. Ranveer later apologized on social media, saying he respects all cultures. Yet, the FIR moves forward amid calls for cultural sensitivity in Bollywood.
