Bollywood superstar Shah Rukh Khan enjoys an immense fan following that knows no bounds. Despite facing some criticism in the past, he has continued to captivate audiences with his exceptional acting skills.
One such instance was the 1994 film Anjaam, a romantic psychological thriller directed by Rahul Rawail. In the movie, Khan portrayed a psychotic lover for the third consecutive time, following his roles in Baazigar and Darr. The audience, however, did not respond favorably to this portrayal, accusing the film of glorifying torture.
Despite the backlash, Shah Rukh Khan remained undeterred and even went on to declare himself a ‘hit hero.’ Anjaam, which also starred Madhuri Dixit, celebrated its 30th anniversary on April 22, 2023, marking a significant milestone in the actor’s illustrious career.
Accused of “glorification of torture,” Shah Rukh Khan told on Aap Ki Adaalat, “In my films, I have used the love angle to defend killing people. But in the climax, we never show that my character gets any sympathy. You can call it glorification when he doesn’t face the repercussions of his actions. But if you watch the climax of all three films (Baazigar, Darr, Anjaam), I am beaten up so badly in all of them.”
During the same conversation, Shah Rukh Khan joked that he started calling himself a “hit actor” because, despite the backlash over Anjaam, the film was still a commercial success, cementing his status as a popular and bankable star in the industry. “I have started calling myself a hit hero because everyone has beaten me so much. Even the heroines have beaten me. It’s just entertainment. That is how I perceive films,” he concluded.
Shahrukh Khan’s hilarious reply left everyone laughing out loud. For more such throwback stories stay tuned with us.
