Women and wine get better with age goes the adage. That’s exactly what happens to this Black Lady. The older she gets, the more coveted she is. With a gold band around her, the Black Lady shone bright on the night of the 58th Idea Filmfare Awards in Mumbai, And, she made her presence felt amongst the biggest and best of Bollywood. The day saw lots of bonhomie and reverence as this year marked the completion of 100 years of Indian cinema.
Hosts Shah Rukh Khan and Saif Ali Khan brought the house down with their jibes. Winners Ranbir Kapoor and Vidhya Balan were back to collect their individual trophies second year in a row — Ranbir for Barfi! (he had won the award last year for Rockstar) and Vidya for Kahaani (last year it was for The Dirty Picture).
One of the highlights of the evening was Ranbir’s thanksgiving speech only through expressions, just like his deaf-mute character. Karan Johar, who was hosting the segment, said this was the best speech of the night. Vidya appeared unsure whether it was her name being announced when Rekha referred to her as Mrs Kapur.
I feel blessed to be associated with the kind of films I’ve been doing. I thank Sujoy (Ghosh) for all the madness that led us here, and Sethu (cinematographer) for making a pregnant woman look beautiful,” said Vidya. Anurag Basu, whose Barfi was declared the Best Film, said, “This belongs to all the nominees. Thanks to the audience for appreciating different cinema as now we have the courage to attempt whichever subject we want to.”
The audience gave Gulzar a standing ovation when he collected the Best Lyrics award for the song Challa from Jab Tak Hai Jaan.
Irrfan, who bagged the critics’ award for Best Actor for Paan Singh Tomar, Best Debut award, Ileana D’cruz said, ” Priyanka Chopra and Deepika Padukone, who are seen bonding in a big way these days, presented the best debut trophy to Ayushmann Khurrana. Gauri Shinde won the Directorial Debut award for English Vinglish and dedicated it to lead actress Sridevi and her own mother “who didn’t know English”.
