Shashi Tharoor replies to Kangana Ranaut over homemakers’ row

In December, Kamal Haasan promised to pay homemakers if his party, MNM, was voted to power in the 2021 Tamil Nadu assembly elections. He released a seven-point Governance and Economic Agenda that read, “Homemakers will get their due recognition through payment for their work at home which hitherto has been unrecognised and unmonetised, thus raising the dignity of our womenfolk.” Yesterday, it was Shashi Tharoor, who stood by Kamal’s views of homemakers receiving monetary fee for their services.

Tharoor had tweeted that he appreciates Kamal’s idea of recognizing housework as a salaried profession, with the government of the state paying a monthly wage to homemakers. He further added that this way women can enhance their power and also create near-universal basic income.

To this Kangana had a different perspective and she tweeted, “Don’t put a price tag on s*x we have with our love, don’t pay us for mothering our own, we don’t need salary for being the Queens of our own little kingdom our home, stop seeing everything as business. Surrender to your woman she needs all of you not just your love/respect/salary.”

In response to Kangana’s tweet, Shashi Tharoor said he agrees to the fact that one cannot put a price tag on the several things that a homemaker does. He further cleared the idea behind this initiative was to empower every woman of India. His tweet read, “I agree with @KanganaTeam that there are so many things in a homemaker’s life that are beyond a price. But this is not about those things: it’s about recognising the value of unpaid work and also ensuring a basic income to every woman. I’d like all Indian women to be as empowered as you!”.
