Manoj Bajpayee and Devashish Makhija targets Oscars for “Joram”

As the upcoming Hollywood awards season draws near, submissions for the 2024 Oscars are flowing in. The Malayalam film “2018: Everyone Is a Hero,” featuring Tovino Thomas in the lead role, has been chosen as India’s official entry to the 96th Academy Awards. Additionally, Vidhu Vinod Chopra’s “12th Fail” has been independently submitted by the filmmakers for consideration in the Best International Feature Film category.

Amidst this, attention is now on Devashish Makhija’s “Joram,” which is gaining attention for its potential international recognition. After being screened at prestigious festivals worldwide, including the International Film Festival Rotterdam, Sydney Film Festival, Chicago International Film Festival, Jio MAMI Film Festival, and Busan International Film Festival, and winning two top honors at the Durban International Film Festival for Best Actor and Best Cinematography, the actor and writer-filmmaker spoke exclusively to Republic about the possibility of submitting “Joram” for Oscars consideration.

Following a successful global tour, Devashish Makhija has expressed enthusiasm about the prospect of submitting “Joram” for consideration at the Oscars. “We have covered five continents this year which means that the world audience has understood and appreciated our film. We would certainly like to (send it to the Oscars),” he noted.

However, recognizing the collaborative nature of the decision, he emphasized it was not solely his call. Manoj Bajpayee echoed this sentiment, stating, “Even the studio is thinking about it. We will do everything in our capacity.
