Delhi HC Plea Urges Ban on Netflix’s ‘Ghooskhor Pandat’ Over Brahmin Defamation
A legal petition has been filed in the Delhi High Court to stop the release of the upcoming Netflix
A legal petition has been filed in the Delhi High Court to stop the release of the upcoming Netflix film Ghooskhor Pandat. The plea claims the movie defames the entire Brahmin community through its title and content. Petitioners argue that “Ghooskhor Pandat” mocks Brahmins by linking them to negative stereotypes like greed and trickery.
The film, directed by Abhishek Sharma, stars Pankaj Tripathi and is set for release soon. It tells a story of a quirky village tale with comic elements. But critics say the title uses “Pandat,” a term often tied to Brahmin priests, in a derogatory way. They call it “collective defamation” that hurts community sentiments across India.
Lawyers for the petitioners point to past cases where films faced bans or edits for similar reasons. They demand the court halt the release until the title changes and objectionable parts are removed. Netflix has not commented yet, but the case highlights growing concerns over OTT content hurting cultural groups.
This controversy echoes debates on free speech versus community respect in Indian cinema. Bollywood often faces such pleas, especially for regional or caste-based stories. The court will hear the matter soon, and its decision could impact future releases.
