Kiran Rao and Aamir Khan have actively promoted their upcoming movie “Laapataa Ladies.” During a recent visit to Delhi for promotions, Kiran Rao was questioned about submitting the film for the Academy Awards next year. Rao expressed interest but emphasized their current focus on promotional activities.
She mentioned at the press conference that their decision would be influenced by the audience’s response, considering it the ultimate recognition if the viewers and the nation appreciate their efforts. “Our primary recognition comes from the audience’s response at the box office. If the viewers and the nation appreciate our work, that would be the greatest accolade for us,” she said.
Additionally, the director elaborated that there exists a particular committee entrusted with evaluating and choosing the top films of the year. She added, “deemed worthy, they “will submit it for the prestigious Oscars”.
After a hiatus of 13 years since “Dhobi Ghat,” Kiran Rao returns to directing with this film. Set in rural India in 2001, it follows the journey of two brides separated during a train ride. The social drama premiered at the Toronto International Film Festival last year to a standing ovation. Starring Nitanshi Goel, Pratibha Ranta, Sparsh Shrivastava, and Chhaya Kadam, it’s presented by Jio Studios and produced by Aamir Khan Productions. It hits theaters on March 1.
