On the evening of the 67th United Nations General Assembly, the joint United Nations programme on HIV/AIDS has appointed Aishwarya Rai Bachchan as internationall goodwill ambassador. She was welcomed into the UNAIDS family by UNAIDS Executive Director Michel Sidibe.
In her new role, she will help raise awareness on issues related to stopping new HIV infections in children and advocate for increased access to antiretroviral treatment.
“I am honoured to accept this appointment. Spreading awareness on health issues especially related to women and children has always been of concern. I pray and strongly believe that no baby should be born with HIV. And I wish that every woman living with HIV stays healthy and has access to treatment.” Says Aishwarya
She also said being a part of the UNAIDS family has acquired a greater meaning and significance for her now that she herself is a mother.
As the ambassador, Ash will also create awareness about the antiretroviral treatment.
