Ranbir Kapoor Was Aanand L Rai’s Original Choice for Raanjhanaa Before Dhanush Took the Role

Few know that before Dhanush’s acclaimed Bollywood debut in the 2013 romantic drama Raanjhanaa, director Aanand L Rai first envisioned Ranbir Kapoor as the film’s protagonist, Kundan. In recent interviews, Rai revealed that he approached Ranbir Kapoor for the project, drawn to the actor’s ability to portray simplicity and blend seamlessly into everyday crowds—a quality Rai considered essential for the film’s lead character.

However, due to scheduling conflicts, Ranbir Kapoor was unavailable at the time of casting. This setback led Rai and his writer Himanshu Sharma to revisit their casting options. Despite this change, Rai emphasized his commitment to storytelling and authenticity, stating that remaining true to the narrative and its characters was his priority, regardless of high-profile casting.

Ultimately, the search for an actor who could embody Kundan’s rootedness brought South Indian star Dhanush into the fold. Dhanush’s heartfelt performance not only earned him critical praise and a Filmfare Award for Best Male Debut, but also helped cement Raanjhanaa as a beloved film in Hindi cinema, grossing approximately ₹94 crore worldwide.

Rai has affirmed that the film’s destiny was fulfilled with Dhanush, highlighting how sometimes the right actor finds the role even if not originally considered.
