Veteran Tamil director and actor Velu Prabhakaran passed away on Wednesday, July 17, at the age of 68. He reportedly suffered a fatal heart attack at his residence in Saligramam, Chennai.
Prabhakaran was well-known for pushing boundaries in Tamil cinema, often tackling bold and controversial themes. He began his career as a cinematographer before transitioning into directing and acting. Some of his most notable films include Kadavul, Puratchikkaaran, and Uliyin Osai, which sparked conversations for their unique storytelling and bold perspectives.
In the 1990s and early 2000s, he gained both fame and criticism for exploring themes related to atheism, superstitions, and social justice. His film Kadavul (1997) in particular received attention for its unconventional approach to religious beliefs.
Apart from directing, he also appeared in many of his films, further showcasing his versatility in the industry. His last known directorial work was Oru Iyakkunarin Kadhal Diary.Fans and members of the Tamil film fraternity expressed their sorrow and paid tribute to the filmmaker’s fearless voice and creative legacy. Velu Prabhakaran’s contribution to Tamil cinema will be remembered for years to come.
His final rites will be held in Chennai.
