Aamir Khan takes time out for a social cause

Aamir Khan only recently returned to Mumbai after a short break in Thailand, with his wife Kiran Rao and son Azad. Within hours of his arrival in the city, he then began preparing for the shoots of his upcoming films — Dhoom:3 and P.K. But a busy schedule did not stop Aamir from taking a day out to travel to Ahmednagar (in Maharashtra) to inaugurate one of India’s largest shelters for women and children — Satyamev Jayate Bhawan. Set up by the NGO Snehalaya.

Aamir had appealed to the viewers to donate funds towards Snehalaya. It is believed that the NGO received over Rs. 1.13 cr from donations from across the country.

 At the opening of the Bhawan in Ahmednagar, Aamir also launched a SJ DVD and witnessed a live performance by music composer, Ram Sampath. “Aamir wanted to attend the launch, so he specially took time out. He spent a lot of time with the kids and the local staff inquiring about the basic facilities that they will be able to provide to women in distress,” says an insider from his team.

This centre will provide women with food and shelter and eventually rehabilitate them,” adds the insider.While Aamir couldn’t be reached for a comment, his spokesperson says, “He was at Ahmednagar to launch Satyamev Jayate Bhawan. He was really touched to receive so much of love from kids at the Bhawan.”
